A giant fresnel lens!

image from A giant fresnel lens!

One of the coolest displays of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is the second order fresnel lens . Originally from White Shoal, Michigan, this lens served Lake Michigan for over 75 years, warning sailors of shallow waters. Due to its size and the refracting capabilities of the lens, its light can be seen over 28 miles.

Visiting The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum

image from Visiting The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum

While staying in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, we ventured up to Whitefish Point. The coast along this part of Lake Superior has seen hundreds of shipwrecks in the last couple centuries, so there is not a more appropriate location for the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum .

The lower falls of Tahquamenon State Park

The lower falls of Tahquamenon State Park were by far our favorite of the two. While not as impressive in size as the upper falls , there are actually more waterfalls. 💦

Beautiful site in the lower falls Hemlock Campground

image from Beautiful site in the lower falls Hemlock Campground

Beautiful site in the lower falls Hemlock Campground! This campground only has a couple sites that are (sort of) big rig friendly. As you can tell from our photo, many branches hang down below 13'6", and this loop around the park has a VERY narrow turn around. While we really love camping in state parks, this one would be a no-go for us to return again with the same rig.
Stay tuned for some of the amazing sites at this location, which made it worth it!

Have you ever seen one of these before? At Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we used this firewood vending machine a few times. Pop in a few dollars and a bundle of firewood is neatly dispensed behind one of two doors for your campfire burning pleasure 🔥

Like history? Then visit Ford Michilimackinac

image from Like history? Then visit Ford Michilimackinac

If you like history one item to put on your list for your Mackinac trip is the Colonial Michilimackinac . It’s a fort that was originally built in 1715 by the French and taken over by the British in 1761 after the French’s defeat in the French and Indian War.

Venturing to Mackinac Island was a lot of fun

image from Venturing to Mackinac Island was a lot of fun

Once on the Island you step back in time. Options for transportation are limited to walking (which is what we did), bicycles (ebikes are restricted!), and horse and buggy. It’s really a different world! We walked around the island a bit for a couple hours and enjoyed Kilwin’s Ice Cream to help alleviate the heat and get off our tired feet for a few minutes.
