We Visited Cape Henlopen State Park
This afternoon we visited Cape Henlopen State Park located in Lewes, Delaware (pronounced “Lewis”). What a cool place! Lewes is in the middle of the state. The term “cape” refers to a piece of pointed land that sticks out into a body of water. They are usually smaller and narrower than a peninsula. This cape was relatively small compared to something like Cape Cod, but was interesting to see. There were also a bunch of horseshoe crabs on the beach, apparently having come ashore to mate and lay their eggs.
But the real shining start of this park is Fort Miles - a military encampment serving as homeland protection during WWII. We walked through the artillery park, seeing some of the artillery that was in service during this time. One of the highlights here was seeing a 16-inch gun and a 10-ton solid steel piece that was used for testing the firing capabilities of the gun. Also, the sand dune bunker is now home to a museum and gift shop, and it was really fascinating walking into the bunker and seeing some of the relics from more than 80 years ago that were used to defend our country.
